As Elon Musk Calls For A ‘Pause’ On AI Development, Will The AI Wars Reach A Temporary Truce?

The Future of Life Institute, supported by Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and DeepMind engineers, has released an open letter calling for an immediate six-month pause in the development of advanced AI.

The letter, signed by 1,300 AI experts and researchers, calls for a pause on “the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4”, the latest iteration of OpenAI’s chatbot, until regulatory frameworks are established.

The pause should involve government intervention if it does not happen quickly.

The open letter does not call for a complete ban on AI development, but a step back from “the dangerous race to ever-larger unpredictable black-box models with emergent capabilities”.

The lack of AI regulatory framework has prompted calls from industry leaders for caution in AI development, including Bill Gates and Sam Altman.
