Elon Musk Joins Call For Pause In Creation Of Giant AI ‘Digital Minds’

Over 1,000 AI experts, researchers, and supporters have signed an open letter calling for an immediate pause on the creation of “giant” AIs for at least six months to properly study and mitigate the capabilities and dangers of systems such as GPT-4.

The letter's signatories include major AI players such as Elon Musk, Emad Mostaque, and Steve Wozniak, along with engineers from Amazon, DeepMind, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, and academics such as cognitive scientist Gary Marcus.

The Future of Life Institute coordinated the authors, citing OpenAI's own co-founder Sam Altman in justifying their calls.

The authors argue that powerful AI systems should only be developed when the effects are positive, and their risks are manageable.

The call for strict regulation contrasts sharply with the UK government's flagship AI regulation white paper, which contains no new powers and instead focuses on coordinating existing regulators.

The Ada Lovelace Institute criticized the announcement, saying that it has significant gaps that could leave harms unaddressed and is underpowered relative to the urgency and scale of the challenge.

According to the UK government's timeline of one year or more for implementing AI regulations has been criticized for leaving risks unaddressed at a time when AI systems are being rapidly integrated into daily life.

The Ada Lovelace Institute and Labour party have voiced concerns that the regulations may take too long to come into effect, while AI technologies such as ChatGPT and Google's Bard are becoming increasingly prevalent.

Shadow culture secretary Lucy Powell stated that the government risks reinforcing gaps in the regulatory system and making it overly complex for businesses and citizens to navigate, particularly with the upcoming data bill.
